I think we can all agree October mornings just got 100x more delightful.
And October mornings are already pretty awesome with their bright fall colors and crisp, sweater-perfect air… except for maybe the general disappointment of getting out of bed when it’s just SO. COMFY. Mornings, generally speaking, are definitely not my jam.
But doughnuts… doughnuts are SO my jam. Brightly striped, fall flavor infused doughnuts… Breathe in and just… Mmmmmmmm. Extra fall awesome points if you’re using sweet potato doughnuts for this.
I’ll be honest, these candy corn inspired doughnuts have been on my to-do list for years. YEARS. But I just could not figure out how to do the striping. How does one stripe doughnuts without dunking them or covering them in a million layers of glaze?!
Well I am excited, legitimately too excited, to have stumbled across the answer while I was working on some 4th of July doughnuts this summer. And holy smokes Batman, is it easy! Even easier than my monster doughnuts, and every bit as tasty!
- 6-8 doughnuts (like these sweet potato doughnuts)
- 1½ cup powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp. milk
- Orange and yellow food gel coloring
- Bake (or buy) you're doughnuts and make sure they've cooled to room temperature (if you baked them). In a medium-size bowl, beat the powdered sugar and milk until it holds soft peaks. Make sure there aren't any powdered sugar lumps before stopping.
- Separate your icing into three bowls. Using a toothpick, tint one red, one blue, and leave the third one white. Spoon a tablespoon or two of each color onto a plate or shallow bowl. Make sure the colors are close enough to touch.
- Using a clean toothpick, swirl the colors together ever so slightly. Dip the top of each doughnut into the icing, making sure you don't push it so far down that it touches the plate (this will make the icing patchy wherever the doughnut touched the plate). Allow the excess icing to drip off before turning the doughnut right side up.
- Add another tablespoon of each icing to the plate, swirl with the toothpick, and repeat. Make sure to refresh the icing between each couple of dips.
- Allow the icing to harden completely (about 20-30 minutes) before packaging.
